Plasma Nitriding, also referred to as ion nitriding, is a diffusion process that improves the wear resistance and fatigue properties of the product being nitrided. The process was developed in the 1920's as an alternative to the gas nitriding process. For a comparison of the two processes choose the Plasma vs. Gas option from the menu. The plasma process is a thermal process performed in a vacuum environment. Choose the Plasma Process option from the menu to learn more about the plasma nitriding process.

This process will produce a diffused layer 0.0005" to 0.024" deep. The case depth achieved is dependent on the alloy being nitrided. For more information on the results you can expect from plasma nitriding, choose the Plasma Engineering Information option from the menu. The hardness achieved is dependent on the alloy constituents in the steel. By choosing the Hardness Chart option from the menu you will see the recommended core hardness, the case depth and the hardness you can expect from the nitride layer.
